Ms. Mary Nelle Traylor

Mary Nelle Traylor, of LaGrange, passed away on May 5, 2020 at her residence. She was born on July 21, 1928 to the late Joe Horsley Traylor and Anna Elizabeth Warren Traylor of LaGrange, GA.

She graduated from Center School in Troup County and from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. Mary Nelle earned a Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences from the University of Georgia in 1957 and a Master of Public Health from the University of California at Berkley in 1962. She worked as the Chief Nutritionist with the State Health Department in Georgia. In 1965 she joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she taught community nutrition. After retirement in 1988 she continued to be active in a variety of professional organizations.

Mary Nelle was always very active in her church serving in many volunteer and leadership roles at both Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville and Long Cane United Methodist Church in LaGrange. After moving back to her family home in her later years she continued her active volunteer services tutoring adults in reading and working at Calloway Gardens as a volunteer. Mary Nelle loved traveling, fancy dinner parties with dear friends, attending the symphony, spending time with her family, and reading.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Joann Smith and her husband Bill, and a nephew in law, John E. Fish. Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Baarda and her husband David; nieces, Jo Anna Fish, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Baarda, Laura Baarda, Ingrid Huey, Karen Cox; and extended cousins, great-nieces and nephews.

Due to public health concerns, the family will have a private graveside service at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at the family’s private cemetery in LaGrange with Rev. Laura Baarda officiating.
